I tried to do the syringe method and my cat choked. Like she did the “I’m going to vomit” retching expression and then crawled off like she’d been injured. I gave her a treat to see if she was able to swallow, and she did eat it (after a little) but now I’m worried it went down the wrong pipe. I put it in sideways, my sibling was holding her still and keeping her head up, but things still went wrong.

The cat in this video is so calm. My can only smells medication, he doesn't let me even come close. How to apply a medication to a cat that is stressfull about it, always moves and tries to escape? I tried to associate it with food, with a game, with treats, nothing helps. Will be helpful for any advice or a link to a video with a "harder patient" 🙂

I have to give me senior cat pills twice a day. She is very resistant to taking them and, even when I follow with water, occasionally (somehow) pukes them out. Tried the ear version, but it's not helping as much. I will try crushing, but any other suggestions? Your cat was a toy compared to mine. She will rip you to shreds if you aren't careful, even with two of us. Can't afford the surgery...

These are great tips when your cat is already hating the carrier. I’d maybe suggest adding how to prevent problems in the future? My breeder says: get a new, bigger transport box so they don’t feel so claustrophobic. They should be able to stand up and turn around in it at least…a box with a side (or even better 2) exits and a top exit. Really important: keep the box in your living room or some place your cat feels good and keep putting kitty’s favorite snacks in there, then gradually practise closing the door for 10 seconds, letting them back out, increase the amount each day, start carrying them for a bit or take them for a car ride around the block to desensitize them. They realize eventually that the carrier is quite fun and they end up liking it. It’s totally worth working with your cat so you don’t need to wrap them in towels and ultimately put them through a hard time. Also, like with kids: the more anxious you are, your cat picks up on it. Getting into a carrier ought to be no big deal. So make sure you yourself are not making it a big deal by fussing over your scared cat. Be matter of fact about it and show them you are not concerned.

These videos could be halpful to those with reasonably passive cats. I tried EVERYTHING! Including suspension in a grooming harness to try and administer her fluids. She just would have none of it...bribes, brushing, petting, holding, etc...etc.... Had to take her in for the vet to do it...out the back, under extreme duress. She hated needles and would literally almost go into cardiac arrest from blood tests. I decided that this was not a quality of life, as well as her Hyperthyriodism and related heart condition. Once treatment of her hyperthyroid commenced with transdermal methimazole, her kidney condition was fully unmasked and she shopped eating almost completely and lost so much weight she looked emaciated. The Hyperthyroid became controlled but her kidneys were too far gone and vet administered sub q had no effect whatsoever. It was at this stage I had to make the hardest decision I have ever had to make and have her put to sleep. There are many cats who simply will not tolerate sub q fluids. I wish videos like this would acknowledge that instead of making it all look so easy.

Thank you for this, I need a pinna alternative also. One question.. are you certain it is safe for all PLO’s to be ingested by mouth? A cursory search includes many PLO’s say ‘do not swallow’. Even if safe for humans, do we know these transdermal bases are safe for our cats?? Thanks for the great info!

All this is very helpful but I have two cats who run away when I get close to them. It’s their schedule not mine. So I can’t really have them laying on a towel or in a basket because as soon as I get close they run away and hide under the bed. I’ve been told to give eye drops 4 times a day to each cat and I’ll be lucky if I get 1 drop on a single cat.

1.) Our cat wouldn't stay still in a towel like the one here for even 5 seconds. This cat appears very calm. 2.) We don't have nice high-up exam tables at home. I am in an apartment with tiny counter space, and he is not allowed to go up there nor does he even try, so not an option, though it would be the best option! 3.) I'll keep perusing videos because as our cat ages, we will need to pill him! Every time we have tried, it rolls around his mouth, and he vomits from the bitterness.

My cat Chloe has a vet appointment in 30 minutes (which was rescheduled because of her escape from yesterday's appointment). I actually got her in the carrier 30 minutes ago and zipped it up. I had to do something for 10 minutes and came out to check on her. She managed to chew through the mesh of the carrier, and now she's nowhere to be found! If she didn't do it then her brother Kiefurr Sutherland chewed it for her (he was hanging around her carrier). Important tip...don't use a soft carrier with panicky cats or they'll do their best impression of a billy goat 🐐.

I have had and been around cats all my life…Grew up on a dairy farm…Your technique will fail the cat and the human…The real struggle with the cowl has the human twisting and putting more and more pressure on the towel…The scruff has direct contact so it’s not done too harshly…I have had to tend to cats they are right next to sedation…Horses, cats most animals are if you control the head and feet you can care for the animals…The cat you have there looks like my Son’s cat…I have his brother…No clip should be used, the towel will fail, direct hand to the skin…Bit and scratched many times proves my point…

I tried every medium. Wet food, tuna juice, chorus, dry food moistened with warm water. Not a pill, a capsule. Have to twist off the top and sprinkle it in the medium. Nope she absolutely will not have it. I am disabled and have no assistant. So we graduate to the high stress method. Wrap kitty in a towel, pry her mouth open and pop the capsule in, holding her mouth closed for at least two or three minutes until I can tell she has swallowed it, followed by lots of praises and a churu if she's not to mad at me to take it. This, after trying to get her to take her meds the vet's way for five days. Five days worth of meds down the drain. At some point, I just quit worrying about her "feelings " and worrying more about her state of health if she doesn't get her meds!
